Heirloom Collards with Carla Kenney
There are 80+ heirloom collard varieties, but most of us have only ever tasted the Georgia collard. Join us at the garden and meet Carla Kenney of Onyx Farm as she opens up a whole new world of varieties, flavors, and goodness.

About the event
Did you know there are over 80 known varieties of collard greens grown across the United States, each with its own history, flavor, and leaf shape? Yet most of us only ever meet one of them: the Georgia collard, the standard bunch sold in nearly every grocery store.
On Sunday, May 24th, from 10:00 AM to noon, Oases Botanic Gardens is thrilled to host Carla Kenney of Onyx Gardens, a grower and seed steward who is helping preserve the rich diversity of heirloom collards. Carla cultivates collards not only for eating, but also for seed, ensuring these culturally significant varieties continue to thrive for generations.
During this event, Carla will share:
Different varieties of heirloom collards and their origins
Why growing your own collards leads to better flavor, nutrition, and resilience
How seed saving protects biodiversity and strengthens community food traditions
